Hospital experience

Over the last few weeks, I had started to experience a lot of contractions when I would come home from work in the evenings.  When we went in for our baby appointment I asked my doctor about it and he said it was nothing and I was just fine.  I was having 6-8 strong contractions and hour, and I just didn't feel like it was taking me serious enough.  I wasn't sure what to do when my mom recommended I email our cousin Sheryl who is a midwife.  Thank goodness I did because she wrote back and said she felt I had a valid concern and should get it checked out.  This was Friday night and Rico and I were going to be getting on the road to Vegas in the morning so we ended up deciding to go to the Labor and Delivery department at McKay Dee hospital.

As it turned out, when they hooked me up to the monitor I was having contractions that were off their charts, and they were coming every couple of minutes.  I could feel about every other one, as those inbetween were less severe and I wasn't even recognizing them as contractions.  Not to mention this was an evening when I wasn't contracting all that much compared to when I'd been coming home from work.  In addition to these contractions, when they checked me I was dilated to almost a 2 and was 70% effaced.  That really alarmed the nurse, and this was when they said we were definitely not going to Vegas and instead they got us admitted and started pumping in the drugs!

They gave me 3 doses of Nifedipine about 10 minutes apart to get a jump start on the contractions.  Then they did a Strep B test, and because it takes 48 hours to run the culture they got me started on a Penicillin drip that I'd have to have every 4 hours.  They also started pumping me with fluids, which, made it incredibly difficult because I had to go to the bathroom every 45 minutes and was hooked up to several monitors.  Once we were in a room they had the NICU nurses come talk to us about what might happen if she came now, verses in a week, verses a few weeks etc.  I spent the night on constant monitoring and had nurses in and out all the time and a few doctors too.

The following morning I was able to go to a post partum room instead of being in Labor and Delivery because things had calmed down enough.  This was a nice change because I wasn't attached to monitors constantly and we could basically breathe a little.  Things continued to settle bit by bit but my uterus was and is still very irritable.

At this point we just wait and see what happens and hope and pray for the best.  She could come at any time, and being that our fFn test was positive twice, it means we have a 50/50 chance of her coming in the next two weeks.  Still means she could wait but we just don't know.  We are staying prayerful and trusting God every step of the way, He has been unbelievably faithful!
